A fire broke out at the former Slater Hawkins Restaurant in the 3000 block of West Kilgore this morning. Firefighters were dispatched around 11:40 a.m. The restaurant has been closed for some time and the building is for sale. Most utilities were inactive, according to firefighters. There appeared to be fire in the attic in the rear part of the structure. However, the firefighting operation was wrapped up in a little over an hour. There was no immediately visible damage to the structure. Two hoses were laid at the scene to provide water, and the Muncie Police blocked off one lane of westbound Kilgore Avenue until the hoses were removed. No cause for today’s fire was immediately determined.
