County Commissioner John Brooke said one reason the project is no longer active was that Clarian was having trouble recruiting physicians to work in the facility. Some local medical officials were concerned that Clarian would handle mostly well-insured patients for elective procedures. That would leave Ball Memorial Hospital to handle local charity care. According to BMH officials, they provided about $50 million of such care in the past fiscal year which ended in June.
