Layoffs at New Castle Foundry

A layoff at New Castle’s Grede Foundry will leave 50 people without a job for an indefinite amount of time. Jeff Hipple, vice president of operations said both hourly employees and management were laid off temporarily on Thursday. Of the plant’s 300 employees, he said, the affected employees were determined based on company policy. Hipple said the layoffs are due to a lack of orders at the foundry. No one received severance packages because the layoffs are not permanent, he said.

January Unemployment Rate Out
11.03.10Indiana’s unemployment rate for January is 9-point-7 percent, the same as the revised numbers for December. State department of workforce development commissioner Teresa Voors says the rate “appears to be holding relatively stable based on the slowing of job losses.” Indiana continues to have the lowest unemployment rate among neighboring states.
