Muncie Fire Units were called to BSU’s LaFollette Halls about 3:45 a.m. this morning There was a report of smoke in the building. Initial reports were that the smoke was coming from a fire in a heater in a basement area. The smoke spread upward through the building. The halls in LaFollette complex were evacuated during the fire fighting efforts. Firefighters had to knock on doors to get students to evacuate their rooms. Worthen arena was opened so the evacuated students would have shelter and warmth until the fire was controlled and it was safe to return. The Red Cross also was sent to the scene to provide students with warm drinks during their stay at the arena. The fire was reported to be “knocked down” about 4:16 a.m. Students are not expected to be able to return to the dorm complex anytime soon.

A Muncie woman is the target of a criminal investigation into allegations that she stole financial aid money. 43-year-old Tina Byrd already faces charges stemming from the death of a four-month-old baby who was in her care when he died unexpectedly in January.
The employee who shot up a state office in portage is scheduled to appear in court today for an initial hearing. The shooting happened Friday at the Indiana department of workforce development office. 60-year-old Edgar Tillery faces up to 50 years in prison if convicted on all charges.
A three-vehicle crash on I-465 on the north side of Indianapolis shut down all eastbound lanes of traffic. State police say the interstate remained closed until after 9 p.m. while repairs are made to the roadway, which was damaged in the crash.
