A Richmond man remains in Reid Hospital after sustaining 11 stab wounds during an altercation. 21-year-old David Powell suffered a collapsed lung as a result of the stab wounds and underwent surgery at Reid Hospital where he was listed Monday in good condition. Officials say Powell and his girlfriend were walking down the street when two white males approached them and began a verbal confrontation.

Illinois-based Sears Holdings has announced the date of one of 4 Indiana stores that will permanently close. The Kmart Super Center on U-S 6 in Portage will close on April 8th. The store’s 209 employee terminations will begin on April first. The Sears store in Anderson’s Mounds Mall is also on the closing list along, although no closing date has been announced.

The Anderson Board of Public Works has approved a 12-month contract to hire Greg Winkler as a consultant to serve in the position of interim economic development director. According to the contract, which was presented and voted on during a meeting Tuesday, Winkler will be paid $126,000 in 2012. Winkler was contracted for the same position during Mayor Kevin Smith’s previous administration. Winkler was a key player in bringing Nestle, Affiliated Computer Services and Altair Nanotechnologies to Anderson.

The Anderson Community Schools school board Tuesday evening unanimously voted Danny McGhee to fill a board vacancy. A handful of people, including the finalists, sat in Anderson High School’s cafeteria, to learn of the decision. McGhee says he wants to focus on getting caught up with the board’s recent actions. But he already has priorities. He says “In particular, he’s looking at improving graduation rates.

Proceedings in a murder trial stemming from a fatal apartment fire in July 2010 have been delayed for the ninth time. Henry Circuit Court 1 Judge Mary Willis accepted a motion to continue the jury trial of 49-year-old Donald Guffey, of New Castle, who is charged with one count of arson resulting in bodily injury and one count of murder. In the motion to continue, both sides agreed if the court granted the continuance – a firm trial date should be set to prevent future delays.

Indiana State Police intercepted a large haul of cocaine in Henry County Tuesday morning. A trooper stopped a tractor trailer for a routine D.O.T. Inspection and became suspicious. The driver gave consent to search the tractor and refrigerated trailer, where troopers found a total of 37 kilos of brick cocaine with a street value of nearly four million dollars. Two men were arrested on charges of possession and possession with intent to deliver. The trailer, which was loaded with lettuce, originated in California and was headed to New Jersey.

A Muncie woman is accused of targeting senior citizens in an effort to boost her own bank account.
25-year-old Michelle Kurns is charged with fraud and theft, after an alleged victim told police that Kurns made her way into the victim’s home and asked for money. Before leaving, Kurns allegedly stole “numerous credit cards” and about $100 in cash. Muncie police say they’ve received numerous other calls stating the same thing happened to them. Kurns was being held without bond at the Delaware County jail.

Just months after a planned integration with another hospital affiliation fell apart, Howard Regional Health System is looking to form an affiliation with Community Health Network. Both companies announced Monday that a letter of intent has been signed. The hospital’s name will be changed to Community Howard Regional Health. The legal steps for the affiliation should be completed by May 1.

Anderson resident and MTV “Teen Mom” Amber Portwood, may soon be out of jail — if a judge agrees to a proposed plea deal. Portwood has filed a plea agreement that would have her plead guilty to one count of possession of a controlled substance and admitting to parole probation violation. According to the plea deal, the case against Portwood will be dismissed if she successfully completes the Madison County Drug Court program. Portwood’s court disposition for the agreement will be held February 6.

Early tax filers have to wait a little longer to receive their refunds from the IRS. Tax preparers have received notice from the IRS that new technology implemented this year was taking up to 5 days longer to validate returns and send refunds via direct deposit. An official statement from the IRS indicates the new system is requiring some fine tuning and some tax payers are receiving their refunds approximately one week later than the initial projections they may have received.
