Two people have been arrested after a police raid on a so-called underground night club in Muncie. 49-year old Tommy Isom and 47-year old Gary Ruffin face cocaine dealing charges, and both may also face some alcohol related charges after police busted Maine’s Place on East Centennial Avenue. Investigators say the men were selling cocaine and booze out of the unlicensed club in the Whitely neighborhood.

GIRL ACCOSTED IN PENDLETON PARK

Police in Pendleton are looking for a suspect after an apparent attack on a teenage girl in a city park. It happened Monday along the wooded trails in Falls Park not far from Pendleton High School. Investigators say a 16-year old girl reported that a man grabbed her from behind but fled after another walker approached them on the trail. Police say the suspect is a thin white man with blonde hair, about six feet tall.

MISSION MAKING PROGRESS REBUILDING

A Muncie homeless shelter continues to rise like a phoenix following a fire earlier this summer. The Muncie Mission is rebuilding the men’s dormitory building that was heavily damaged by a blaze on the 4th of July weekend. The next big step will be the completion of the Mission’s kitchen and the re-opening of its dining room by the middle of September.

CRASH SERIOUSLY INJURES MOPED RIDER

A moped driver has been seriously injured in a traffic accident near a busy Muncie intersection. Police say 23-year old Eugenio Avila-Hernandez pulled in front of an oncoming SUV while making a left turn into a convenience store near Morrison and McGalliard Roads Wednesday afternoon. The man suffered head and facial injuries—the SUV driver wasn’t hurt.

Another eight employees have tested positive for drugs amid a shakedown at the Pendleton Correctional Facility. The Indiana Department of Correction says 46 workers at the prison have tested positive but deny taking any illegal drugs. Another 12 prison employees have been suspended and face termination after testing positive and admitting drug use.

NON-PROFIT AGENCY REASSURES PUBLIC

A Delaware County non-profit agency says it’s here to stay after its director and two other employees were fired. Action, Incorporated board president Dianna Bennington says the organization that oversees the local Head Start program and others will work with state officials to tighten up its operation. A recent state audit raised some serious questions about Action’s financial situation.

ANDERSON TRANSFERS NOT GOING FAR

Nearly 1,400 students have left the Anderson Community Schools since the end of the 2009-10 academic year. But they didn’t go far to find new schools to attend. Most of those students have ended up in neighboring districts, including Frankton-Lapel, South Madison, Daleville and Yorktown. About 180 of those former ACS students are now at Frankton-Lapel.

Officials will break ground this afternoon on a new park in downtown Muncie. It’ll be called Canan Commons in honor of former Mayor Dan Canan. The park will be mostly open green space across from the downtown YMCA building. City officials hope to host numerous events at Canan Commons, including Ribfest and Muncie Gras.

LONGFELLOW MP3 PROGRAM

Students at a Muncie school will be getting more instructional time in an effort to improve reading skills. It’s called Muncie-P-3, or MP3 for short, a program at Longfellow Elementary School designed to get kids reading at grade level by the time they’re 3rd graders. Ball State, the Buley Community Center, and the Huffer Memorial Children’s Center are partners in the project.

CARDINAL GREENWAY PASSES 50

One of Indiana’s longest linear parks is about to turn 51—not years old, but miles long. The Cardinal Greenway will soon stretch along 51 miles of paved path between Gaston and Richmond. The first section of the Greenway was paved in 1998. The trail attracts thousands of bikers and walkers from all over central Indiana.
