Hamilton Heights students will find faster computers, video streaming in all of their classrooms and friendlier technology for their parents to reach teachers in the fall. 
Fiber optics linking about a three-mile stretch from the high school to the middle school will be installed along the railroad in Arcadia.  The School Board Tuesday agreed to pay $125 annually to the Hoosier Heritage Port Authority to lease the land on which the fiber is installed.  The money will come from the district’s capital projects fund and is related to the $4.3 million renovation and improvement project bond also approved Tuesday.

Well-Known Actress to Appear at Ball State

Actress Joyce Dewitt, a BSU alumni, will be in Muncie this coming Monday and speak at University Theatre.  She’s most well know for her starring role in the past TV series, “Three’s Company.”   That show also featured the late John Ritter.   Her presentation will be at 7 p.m. on Monday.

Anderson GM Retirees Worry About Bailout

It’s beginning to seem unlikely that the federal government will come through for the corporate automotive giants remains to be seen, thus putting jobs and pensions of millions of workers and retirees in limbo. With Anderson’s large population of GM retirees, the entire city could be affected by the loan decision.   A vote on the matter when had been tentatively scheduled for today has been cancelled.   Also hurting the automaker’s chances are revelations yesterday that the top executives flew to Capitol Hill in private corporate jets to testify.  The cost of each executive’s trip is estimated at $20,000.

Muncie Murder for Hire Trial Continues

Testimony continued yesterday in the murder-for-hire trial of Tony French.   Witnesses confirmed that French spoke of wanting to kill his wife.  Former Daleville resident Jess David Woods is scheduled to stand trial next month on charges that he fatally shot Teresa French in exchange for $5,000 paid by the victim’s husband.  She was found dead in the garage of the couple’s home in 1993.

Muncie Cuts Back Snow Plowing Plans

Here’s hoping for an easy winter, at least if you live in Muncie.  Driving conditions will likely be worse because the city no longer has the resources to remove snow as well as it has in the past, Jonathan Morehead, Muncie superintendent of public works, told The Star Press Wednesday.   The city no longer has funds to pay snowplow drivers overtime, meaning snow removal will occur only during business hours Monday through Friday, unless the mayor gives instructions otherwise, according to Morehead.

Suspect Arrested in Marion Shooting

Marion Police arrested the man they believe is responsible for a shooting at Streaty’s Ladies and Gentlemen’s Club in October.  Louis Thomas Rogers III was arrested in the case.  Deputy Chief Cliff Sessoms said police believe a fight broke out at the club in the early morning hours of Oct. 19. Rogers was escorted out of the club by the security there at the time. He went out to a vehicle, retrieved a gun and then came back into the club through a different door, Sessoms said, and he shot two men.

Anderson Fire Department Food Drive Needs Contributions

The Anderson Fire Department currently has a food drive in progress.  APD started a holiday food drive this month, which will continue through Christmas, collecting food to give to Anderson’s Operation Love to make holiday food baskets for families in need.  The drive, however, has had a slow start.   Those who want to help can drop off food donations at any city fire station.  Drop off hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Temporary Layoffs at Chrysler in Kokomo

Employees at two Kokomo Chrysler transmission plants are staying home for the week. The Kokomo Tribune reports today that about 1,500 employees at Indiana Transmission Plant I & II are on temporary layoff this week due to decreased demand for transmissions, according to Chrysler.  The company says it is based on market demand

Pendelton Man Dies When Crushed by Car

Noblesville Police yesterday released the name of a man who was killed in a restaurant parking lot when his car rolled over him while he was apparently underneath working on it.  The man was found under his car in the Applebee’s parking lot.  The victim was Charles L. Coleman of Pendelton..  Initial investigation determined that Coleman must have been working on the car when it rolled over him.

Congressman Pence Has New Leadership Role

Indiana 6th District Congressman Mike Pence was elected yesterday as the next chairman of the Republican Conference.  He replaces Adam Putnam of Florida, who stepped down after the election.  Pence was former head of the Republican Study Committee, the conservative faction that now makes up more than half of House Republicans.
