Two more budgetary causalties in the city of Muncie. Mayor Sharon McShurley has announced that both the Buley and Ross Centers will be closing. The city will no longer pay the $62,000 from the Parks Department to fund the two centers. Students who use the Buley Center will instead be sent by MITS bus system to the Boys and Girls Club on South Madison Street. Students from the Ross Center will also get their services there. A meeting of those concerned about the changes will be held tomorrow at 4 p.m. It’s at the Ross Center.

The Treasury Department said that it will provide $5 billion to GMAC Financial Services LLC, the ailing financing arm of General Motors Corp., from the $700 billion bank rescue program.  The Treasury Department said that it will provide $5 billion to GMAC Financial Services LLC, the ailing financing arm of General Motors Corp., from the $700 billion bank rescue program.  The government will receive preferred shares that pay an 8 percent dividend and warrants to purchase additional shares in return for the money, the department said.

Muncie Man Gets 18 Months in Accident Case

The Star-Press is reporting a Muncie man who struck a pedestrian with his pickup truck and then drove away was sentenced Tuesday to 18 months in prison by Delaware Circuit Court 3 Judge Robert Barnet Jr.  Terry L. Kuhns had pleaded guilty to failure to stop after an accident resulting in serious bodily injury and obstruction of justice, both Class D felonies.  Authorities said Kuhns struck and badly injured Brian E. Stevenson in the 800 block of West 14th Street in March.

Crash Victim Still in Critical Condition

The Elwood woman critically injured in a crash that killed another Elwood woman on Friday remains in critical condition.  According to a hospital spokesman, Karen Vinson was involved in that crash which killed fellow Elwood resident Jessica Lynch who died.  That accident was one of two fatal crashes on Indiana 37 on Friday morning.  It was caused by rain and ice slickened roads.

Local Robotics Group Plays Big Roll in Muncie New Year Celebration

The local robotics team has designed the New Year’s “ball” which will be used in tonight’s Muncie Community New Year’s Eve celebration.  The team is composed of students from all Muncie and Delaware County Schools.  That ball will be lowered by the team at midnight.

Jay County United Way Meets Goal

Great news from Jay County today.  They have met 100% of its United Way goal.   $207,000 has been raised.  The agency helps fund 19 member agencies.

Hartford City Gets Brownfield Grant

Big money is coing to Hartford City in the form of a brownfield grant.  The Indiana Finance Authority has awarded the city a brownfield grant of $38,627 to assess a former lumber yard at 626 E. Washington St.  The property is privately owned, but the city is interested in acquiring at least part of it to improve traffic on Ind. 26, said Mayor Dennis Whitesell.  The site is currently used for storage.

New Castle Man Arrested in Indy Area Robbery Attempt

A New Castle man as arrested near Anderson early Tuesday morning after fleeing the scene of an attempted robbery.  Michael Staggs,  allegedly entered a 7-Eleven convenience store on Pendleton Pike in Lawrence and threatened a clerk with a handgun. He took no cash or property because the attendant fled into a back room.

Others Expected to Run Against Mark McKinney in Next Election

After a year of upheaval for the Muncie-Delaware County Drug Task Force and its attorney, the new year promises to be the start of a long political fight for Prosecutor Mark McKinney.  The May 2010 primary is 17 months away, and already Republican attorneys are talking about challenging McKinney, a first-term Democrat who is at the center of the DTF storm.  According to today’s Star Press,  Kaye Whitehead, chairwoman of the Delaware County Republican Party, said, “There have been a number of people express an interest to me in that position.”
