Hartford City native Reece Mann has been named the new superintendent of Monroe Central Schools. The school board voted unanimously to give Mann the job during its regular meeting this week. Mann replaced Shane Robbins, who will be leaving the district this summer to take the top spot at Northwestern Consolidated Schools of Shelby County. Mann served as the interim superintendent during Robbins’ deployment to Afghanistan. Mann’s first day on the new job will be August 1st.

Man’s Death Could Be Linked To Murder Of Pregnant Teacher

Police say the death of a Richmond businessman could be linked to the murder case of a pregnant teacher. Billy Nakis, an owner of Carver’s Restaurant, was found dead Tuesday inside his home. An apparent suicide note was recovered from the scene. Officers had interviewed Nakis as part of their investigation into the death of Tonawanda Thompson, who was his ex-girlfriend. Thompson was fatally shot in her car last week. The unborn baby did not survive.

Busy Muncie Intersection To Close

McGalliard Road between Granville Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard will be closed for about four weeks beginning Monday/May 14 for improvements. The project includes installation of a concrete island in the center of McGalliard and modifications to the existing traffic signals, and the modification and replacement of railway signs, crossing gates and flashers. The area will be closed 24 hours a day during the four-week period and will not be open to traffic. The official detour will follow North Barr Street, East Princeton Avenue and North Broadway.

ACS Revises School Dress Code

Next year, Anderson Community Schools’ dress code will once again see some slack.
Greg Kalisz, director of Student Services who headed the dress code committee, presented the revised dress code to the school board Tuesday night. It allows cargo pants and shorts, gray and khaki pants and black, brown, gray and khaki denim. Striped shirts will be permitted as long as they have a collar or are a turtleneck or mock, and shirts will have to be tucked in. The policy on closed-toe shoes and boots will stand.

Wilson Middle School May Be Losing Ground

Wilson Middle School might be losing ground. The Muncie Community School Board voted Tuesday night to look at the possible sale of some of the school’s acreage. The school originally bought about 57 acres, according to MCS Chief Financial Officer Mark Burkhart, who suggested having 12 unused acres, located on the north end of the property, surveyed and appraised.

Republicans Close Ranks Around Mourdock

Indiana Republican leaders are moving quickly to close ranks behind state Treasurer Richard Mourdock. Mourdock‘s six fellow statewide officeholders, led by Governor Daniels, joined Mourdock at state Republican headquarters in a show of unity. Daniels and state Republican Chairman Eric Holcomb moved to pre-empt Democratic charges that Mourdock is a “Tea Party extremist.” Daniels says Mourdock‘s commitment to smaller government is squarely within the Republican mainstream, and predicts Hoosier voters will embrace it against what he calls an unprecedented expansion of government under President Obama.

He Strapped The Kids To The Hood

A Fort Wayne father is facing charges after he allegedly drove drunk with four young children strapped to the hood of his car. Witnesses called 911 after they spotted a man and woman pull out of a liquor store parking lot with four children tied down with tow straps. The man was arrested on preliminary charges of neglect of a dependent and operating a vehicle while intoxicated. The woman, who is the mother of one of the children, is also facing charges.

Muncie Area Career Center – Adult Education Graduation Ceremony will take place on Thursday, May 17 at 7 p.m. at Southside High School Auditorium.
The Muncie Area Career Center Technical Education Awards Program will be Monday, May 21, beginning at 7 p.m. at the MACC Gymnasium
Muncie Central’s Commencement will be Monday, June 11 at 7:30 p.m. at Emens Auditorium.
Southside’s Commencement Ceremony will be Tues. June 12 at 7:30 p.m. at Emens Auditorium.

Anderson Firefighters Kept Busy

Anderson firefighters are investigating two fires, an early Wednesday blaze destroying a garage and the second from Tuesday afternoon causing minor damage to a home. Anderson Fire Chief Phil Rogers says firefighters responded to a garage fire just before 2 a.m. Wednesday at 500 Hawthorne Avenue. While the fire was out within 25 minutes, firefighters remained on the scene for about two hours more doing salvage and overhaul of the garage that was destroyed. The cause is still unknown. Around 3:15 p.m. Tuesday firefighters were called to Columbus Avenue where smoke was coming from the rear of the home. The fire there was contained to the first floor storage area of the home and was put out very quickly. There was minor damage, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. No one was hurt in either fire.

State Police Hold Memorial Service

The Indiana State Police Post at Pendleton held their annual memorial service Wednesday for those members of the department that gave their lives in the line of duty. Troopers present were brought to attention and prepared for the roll call. Captain Mike Eslinger and Lieutenant Bob Burke then read each fallen member’s name, along with a description of the circumstances surrounding their death. A total of 46 members of the Indiana State Police have died in the line of duty since the department’s inception in 1933. Family members of fallen Pendleton Motor Carrier Inspector Robert Pitcher and fallen Troopers Robert Garrison and Roy Jones were in attendance.
